A society is a combination of many kinds of people. They follow different religions and celebrate different festivals. They have different cultures, customs, and beliefs. There are many problems also in society Dowry system is a great problem in mainly the Tarai region of Nepal.
All societies are not so developed or civilized. Even in modern developed societies also there are many social problems, Drug addiction, alcoholism, theft, kidnapping, trafficking, fighting, war, chaos, discrimination, untouchability, etc. are some such social problems.
Nepal is a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multilingual country. Each and every society here has many kinds of people. Different people have different beliefs and traditions. Many social problems prevail in different societies. One of the m is the dowry system. Dowry is the money and/or property that, in some societies, a wife or her family must pay to her husband when they get married.
Or it is the property or money the father gives to his daughter in the marriage ceremony willingly out of his love and affection for his daughter. But in some parts, it has become compulsory for the parents of the bridegrooms. It may be anything such as jewelry, TV, furniture, expensive mobile sets, radio, computer, motorbike, household appliances, and cash.
The Dowry system is not a good system for any person or society. It makes many youths dependent, misuses property, and also becomes a cause of the murder of many women. However, it has been a part of a tradition in mostly Tarai of our country. Some bridegrooms and their parents shamelessly demand a large amount of money or jewelry etc. from the bride’s parents.
It has become a great problem in the poor societies in Nepal and India also. By this system, poor people could not marry their daughters. Many poor people become homeless after the marriage of their daughters. They have to sell their land and sometimes themselves to pay the loan. This even causes crimes and damage to many girls. Any how such systems should be prohibited from all societies.
In this way, the dowry system is a cruel crime. This must be abolished from our society. It spoils the life of many girls and women in our country every year. Giving and taking dowry is like an illegal business introduced by some bad people in society. So, I would like to request all the youths and their parents not to be dependent on other’s property; ask them to be self-depend and laborious.
