What does the term Information Technology or IT really mean? Information technology is the technology by which information is processed, communicated, exhibited, and retrieved in a fast, error-free, and proper way.
Information technology is a technology in which both telecommunication and computer technologies work together to provide information. Every day new technology and invention are being made in the area of information, processing, and traveling.
There is hardly any area which had not been affected by this. The whole world has become a small or narrow place today. Any information can be exchanged by people in a few seconds and that, too, in a proper and effective way without any loss of data while it is being processed.
On the one hand, all these different ways of telecommunication and information exchange have highlighted the necessity for multipurpose development and growth of information technology and on the other, the easy access and use of it have boosted the network of information exchange.
All this has been possible through information technology like telephone, fax, telex, computers, Internet, e-mail, photocopier, printer, scanners, cellular phones, pages, videophones, digital cameras, multimedia, etc.
These technologies are becoming a part and parcel of our lives and are transforming the lifestyles and habits of people all over the world. The use of computers has increased by leaps and bounds worldwide. Internet and multimedia have now become playthings for children. The Internet has revolutionized every field of the world.
The Internet has put an unprecedented amount of buying and selling power in the hands of all those within a keystroke distance of a computer. Digital technology is playing a vital role in our day-to-day life.
It is in supermarkets, hospitals, factories, education to agriculture. The government of Nepal and the private sectors are very keen to achieve a great deal in the field of information technology.
Institutes of Information Technology are being set up at various places in the country. The term refers to recent technological developments that are taking place in our world as a result of better technology, due to better information.
It consists of a number of allied modern advancements such as computers, the Internet, websites, surfing, E-mail, E-commerce, etc. E-governance, Video- conference, cellular phones, paging, fax machines, smart cards, credit cards, ATM cards, etc. all have been possible due to the advancement in information-gathering techniques or systems.
The twenty-first century belongs to the IT world. The recent development in the IT world has reduced man’s labor, and workload, and has created a better world to live in. But everything has its bad and good aspects. Overuse of anything is not good. Only proper and wise use if IT can be fruitful otherwise it may be harmful, too.
